We’ve used the Capresso Coffee Maker for the last twelve or so years and the charcoal water filters do exactly what you’d like them to do: filter the water before making the coffee. We change them on the first of each month and believe that they make a big difference in the taste of our coffee.

I normally purchase these filters from one of a local kitchen or appliance store; however, they were all out and the stores could not give me an ETA. Therefore, I purchased them on Amazon because I needed them. The price wasn’t any bargain compared to store bought but with Amazon’s free shipping; it did save me some gas money. As for the product itself I have been using it for years and it is made for my coffee maker and I have no complaints. I mean there isn’t a whole lot you can say about these filters unless you notice that they don’t work.

3 Stars Carbon Shortage?
Maybe the global warming folks have it wrong, maybe there isn’t a carbon shortage? Why else would these filters go up $6 in less than 3 years? Just a theory.

3 Stars To Filter or not to Filter; that is the question!
This is my 3rd Capresso 454 Coffee maker. I love them! Great coffee, all the time.

The filters that are used (1 comes with it) are about $5 each…3 for $15. What a giant ripoff!!

First, I think charcoal filters are a good idea….but Jeez, $5 per filter?!! These things should sell for $.50 each! A total ripoff!

My suggestion (after buying a 3 pack) is to use filtered water…or tap water. I don’t think you will see a difference.

This filter is specially shaped to go into the little basket, so other filters won’t work. What a great idea…One could spend a fortune on filters alone!

Use plain cold water….tastes the same!

5 Stars Great value, easy to install
I was a bit wary about this filter when I bought it because I couldn’t find installation instructions anywhere.

Here’s the deal: you remove the unit from it’s package, remove the aerator that should already be on your faucet, screw on the units custom aerator (which connects to the filter via thin tubing), arrange the filter where you’d like it to sit, and that’s it. You’re done. Water is shunted through the filter by employing the metallic switch on the side of the aerator (by pulling it out).

It’s very simple which is probably why no one mentions exactly how this thing works.

Last but not least, tap water tastes much, much better filtered through this device. Or rather, the absence of taste is what’s notable.

Bottom line: fantastic filter at a very reasonable price.

5 Stars Looks, works and tastes great
I bought this filter after the water dispenser in my refrigerator died. It looks great on my countertop and produces very fresh-tasting “polished” water from my tap, without a trace of chlorine. Coffee and orange juice from frozen concentrate made with this water taste great — I even use the water in my humidifier, which makes the air in my house feel fresher, too. Installation was fairly easy, the unit comes with several faucet adapters, as well as a large plastic wrench for removing the hood to change filters. It feels light right out of the box but once there’s residual water in it from use it’s quite stable. I thought the hose from the faucet to the filter might get in the way when swinging the faucet from side-to-side but that hasn’t been the case — it’s long enough to allow the filter to sit next to my standard-size sink with no tugging. Water flow from the filter is very good, it fills a gallon pitcher in about 30 seconds (compared to my refrigerator, which took more than a minute just to fill a large glass). The valve that diverts water from the faucet to the filter works flawlessly, but expect a little drippage from the filter spout for a few minutes after use (not a big deal). I can’t verify the claims for what chemicals the filter is actually removing from my water (other Web sites say it reduces 97% of lead, mercury, etc.), but the taste of my tap water is greatly improved.

I switched from a Brita faucet-mounted water filter to this one. Though the initial investment is greater, it is well worth the money for the ease of use and installation this product offers, as well as its longevity. The faucet-mounted filters tend to break or need replacement yearly, and the filter needs replacement yearly for this countertop model. The price of replacing a faucet mounted filter and replacing the filter for this countertop are nearly identical. The countertop offers a much faster flow of water, much easier operation, and it does not take up room in a small sink when you’re trying to wash dishes. The spout is movable (though it cannot be separated from the body) which is a huge help when you’re trying to fill something tall like a pitcher, or when you’re trying to get a drink of water and your sink is full of dishes that will splash the water around. The unit is fairly large, but attractive. The water tastes very bright and clear. This unit is worth the extra bit of money for a more permanent solution to gross tasting water.

We are happy with the filter. We have old pipes with heavy and a heavy sediment problem. The filter was a great solution to the constant purchasing of bottled water. It was super easy to install and the filter lasted well over a year. I did have to replace the faucet adapter after a year because the sediment clogged the valve. It was easy to find at a local plumbing store. One trip was still a hell of a lot easier than hauling bottles of water every couple weeks and then dealing with the recycling center.

5 Stars great water, no problems
We got this pitcher to replace an old, old one we’d be using for years (one of the square footprint ones).

While the old one had numerous minor problems, this one is great. The only remotely frustrating thing is that, sometimes while pouring, my thumb’ll rest on the tab to open the hatch on the top, popping it open. That’s the extent of the trouble. It doesn’t cause any more severe problem, like dumping water everywhere, and the whole lid doesn’t fall off the way it does on some other filtration pitchers (brita or otherwise).

What good is it when it falls apart every third time you use it????? Horribly designed. Ultimately threw it out. Will not buy another from this company. They evidently didn’t test it or if they did, didn’t care that it was highly prone to simply falling apart in front of your very eyes without any urging whatsoever. Like getting slapped in the face.

If you want frustration, I urge you to buy it and see what happens.

I love my Brita. You get fresh bottled water taste without the waste of plastic bottles. I like that this model has the meter on top to let you know when it is time to change the filter. I use it every day to fill my reusable water bottle and I have saved a ton of money not buying cases of water. I feel I am helping the environment by not using plastic bottles.

4 Stars Better Than Tap Water
We had quite a “fancy” water purifier for many years and since we couldn’t decide what to purchase to replace it, we ordered a Brita for the transition. It’s been a good purchase since it makes the water taste good, but it seems the filter goes out way before the two month suggested change. It begins to taste “off” after about 5-6 weeks. There’s two of us using it, me and my husband, and we do like to drink water … but I would think it should last longer.

It’s easy to clean and easy to fill. Nice design for its purpose.

I am new to filtered water, we’ve been buying bottled for years. What bothers me about this Brita pitcher is that the filter doesn’t “lock” in place and I can see a gap at the top between the filter and the sides of the filter chamber. I’m sure unfiltered water just goes through there to the pitcher without going through the charcoal. I’m thinking of returning it.

This Brita Pitcher works just as my old one did, however it is much bigger which, for me, is great. Because of its size it might be a bit heavy for some to handle. I like the fact it is bigger because I use a lot of filtered water and I don’t have to keep filling it as often as I did the smaller one.

4 Stars Top Brita Pitcher but also Consider the Brita 35530 Ultramax Dispenser
Overall this is one of the best pitchers Brita offers. Its defining characteristic is its extra large capacity (reducing the number of times you have to refill it)

PROS:

It is Brita’s largest pitcher (with a 10 cup capacity)

It is very quick and easy to refill (you don’t have to remove the entire lid like on the older models)

CONS:

The pitcher can get VERY HEAVY when full because water is heavy (this might be a problem for children, elderly, etc.)

The reviews are true (you have to wait for water to sink to bottom before you use it or else the lid falls out and you get water all over the kitchen counter)

BOTTOM LINE: It is my favorite Brita pitcher because of its extra large capacity, but I would consider Brita 35530 Ultramax Dispenser in conjunction with this or as an alternative since 10 cups of water can get heavy and Brita 35530 Ultramax Dispenser is easier to use.

4 Stars Great filter if you follow this little bit of advice…
At first, I did experience what a few of the other reviewers mentioned: after a short while the filter didn’t appear to have any affect on the taste of the water.

The problem, I discovered, is that if you run the water through the filter too quickly (by opening up the tap all the way) the charcoal filter just can’t do its job. As a rule of thumb, only allow enough flow through the filter so that it takes about 10-15 seconds to fill up a glass of water, and you’ll have great tasting water. So, if you have high water pressure, make sure you don’t open of the faucet all the way when filling a glass. There’s just no way a filter as small as this can do its job properly at the max flow rate of most faucets. You really need a large in-line filter for that.

Note that this only applies to the filter’s odor and taste removal properties, because this involves a chemical reaction of sorts where activated charcoal pulls chlorine (and other chemical) out of the water by binding to them. This is a completely different mechanism than what you normally associate with filtering, such as particles being caught in a mesh (which is essentially how the rest of the filter works in these, and so it’s really only the odor and taste that is affected by the rate at which you let water through the Cullgan).

5 Stars works perfectly fine
This filter works just great. I always used Pur faucet filters, but if you have high water pressure, sooner or later, it will break up… This one, instead, has no problems at all and the water tastes exactly the same. Good deal for the price.

The only flaw is a lack of an indicator that tells when it’s time to change it, but they send you a sticker to put on your calendar minimalist, but efficient.

2 Stars Replacement cartridge leaks
Looks like I was unlucky. These cartridges leaked when I put them on the faucet mount. The first replacement I was able to manage with some teflon plumbing tape but the second squirted water all around the sink. I plan to buy the whole unit again because it makes my water taste better. This is the only reason I would give it 2 stars. Surprisingly I dont see too many bad reviews or any that say that the replacement leaked. Wonder why.

3 Stars FM-15RA inconsistent with FM-15R – please advise!
Hi, perhaps someone can resolve my confusion.

I also decided to add these photos for clarification to the guy who responded to me stating that he didn’t have what to compare the FM-15RA with:

I just purchased some FM-15RA replacement filters. In the past, I used to get the FM-15R models which were made in USA (not China like these newfangled 15RA ones).

Anyway, in the past, I’d found that some of the FM-15R ones would gush (rather than flow), so I phoned Culligan in mid 2008, and after LOTS of hassle, reached a guy who actually knew something.

He asked me to check whether any of the holes are black rather than white. He said that all the holes need to be white NOT black to filter well.

Sure enough, the ones which gushed had some black holes, so he sent replacements which all had pure white at the holes.

Anyway, now I received the ones made in China, which seem like junk, since they’re lighter weight than the USA ones. Note i still have the USA ones, so i could compare.

Also, in the past, the USA ones did not emit what looks like vapor/smoke (probably the charcoal), upon screwing in & trying out for the first time. But the Chinese-made one DOES cause vapor/smoke (charcoal) to emit – which gives me the creeps, because it reminds me of when I erroneously poured Drano down the drain & it emitted similar vapor & hissed toxicly for a long time afterward to the extent that the clog-fixer-guy said it might have caused corrosion of pipes.

But above all:

I’m really baffled now, because these newfangled Chinese made FM-15-RA’s all have greyish-black at the holes, rather than white. Yet the one I just now tried is not gushing (despite the blackish holes). Rather, it’s flowing.

This is inconsistent with what the Culligan guy had told me regarding the FM-15R. Because going according to him, these newfangled ones ought to be gushing since the holes are not pure white, but rather greyish black??!!

So what am I to believe?

Despite the reviews mentioning problems with the PUR faucet filter, I purchased a PUR faucet filter from a local in-store retailer. I returned it because it wouldn’t thread onto my standard thread faucet… Next purchase was this Culligan filter. I can’t comment on taste comparison as the PUR was defective out of the box, but the Culligan is superior construction, a quality product. As other reviewers states, the flow is decreased when using the filter. I’m quite happy with this purchase. Good quality product at great price with fast, free shipping when including an extra filter with the order. Great prices for the replacement filters also.
