2 Stars Broke Easily
Used this twice for on backpacking trips on the AT…one week trip and a weekend. Worked very well. Took it on a long day hike and couldn’t get it to work…found out that the intake stem was broken. Never put the filter under too much stress for it to break in such a way. My advice…pay more for a better qaulity pump.

I purchased this to replace my Sweetwater filter that failed at the furthest point out on a recent trip. Fortunately, another hiking group had this unit and was willing to fill our water containers. It worked flawlessly and did it in a surprisingly short time. Katadyn has always been a very reputable company, and I am sorry that I did not purchase one of it’s products the first time.

I received this last March as A birthday present and just used it for the first time, it works great. I first tried it out on some accumulated rain water in our camp tarp; the water was not quite clear, but tasted fine. I drank the filtered water all weekend with no ill effects, so it must work. I would recommend this product to any one who hikes, bikes or any other outdoor activities. It ways almost nothing and is very simple to use. I love it!

3 Stars Fast but somewhat complicated
This filter works very fast, filling a 1L bottle in about a minute. However, getting to that point can be a chore. There are a lot of small parts and hoses and input versus output and caps and attachments…etc… I’ll give Katadyn credit, they certainly give you a lot of parts, various attachemnts for bottles and water bags, even extra parts if you want to cut your water bag hose and add in the easy fill attachment. That’s nice. But this means a lot of small, extra parts that serve to confuse, espcially if you are using it for the first few times. However, once you get it all figured out, it pumps just fine, and fills bags and bottles fast. It takes longer to set up the pump than it does to fill your bottles, but it gives a nice clean taste.

Overall I’d recommend it, but learn how to set it up before you go into the wilderness. Also, take just the pieces you need, because keeping all the extra parts with the unit will either lead to confusion, or lost parts!

I’ve been looking for a small water filtration system for my hiking pack that didn’t rely on yucky-tasting chemical tablets and drops. When I saw this on a survival gear review online, I immediately bought it. It’s so small and light that everyone should add it to their camping/hiking gear, emergency bag or glove box/first aid kit. It also fits comfortably in a pocket for extreme situations when you don’t necessarily have access to your other gear.

This product is an excellent addition to any survival kit as a last resort back-up to filters or conventional water treatment. Doesn’t take up much room at all, and very light.

5 Stars Essential item for third world travels
I bought the Aquamira filtration straw as a lightweight way to keep safe and not get sick from water-born illnesses (Cryptosporidiosis and Giardiasis being the two major ones) while abroad. I still carry water filtration tablets while abroad as a “just in case” item, but let’s face it – that’s a pain to deal with and you need to be planning ahead. Sometimes you just need to drink now.

I really can’t get over how light this thing is. It weighs less than an ounce, and fits easily inside of any pocket you can think of. The collapsible straw is a bonus. The straw is rated at being able to filter around 20 gallons of water before it’s discarded.

The price and size make this a “must have” for any hiker/camper/traveler/survivalist. Sure, you’ll probably not use it, you’ll be glad you have it.

5 Stars You get what you pay for
My first cheaper, lighter, pump filter cracked on the second day of a week of backpacking on Isle Royale Natl. Park – which has cysts among other biologicals in the water. It was the first time I ever used it after testing it with tap water at home. More pressurized, UNfiltered water sprayed out the crack than into my canteen. Filling a canteen took forever, but it could have been much worse if it didn’t filter at all. Carrying fuel for boiling was out of the question. Buy this Katadyn and never worry about your drinking water again. How much is NOT having intestinal distress worth when you are on vacation and far from medical care or meds? THe Red Cross has used them to filter water in Africa for sixty years with no failures. Save your pack weight somewhere else, the extra pound that this filter weighs is well worth the assurance of safe water it affords. Filter your water from the top of the source to avoid the bottom sediment and it will last for generations. This filter is so reliable that you don’t need to carry a backup unless you are absent minded and likely to leave it by the stream after filling your canteen. I have the decades old, white model, but it still works like new.

5 Stars Reliable performer
I’ve tried (and broken) numerous different water filters. I consider myself very gentle with my equipment but lately I’ve broken my fair share of “plastic” filters. I won’t “name names” but these were name brand filters… I finally abandoned my quest for the uber-light and got a Pocket Filter. I could not be happier with my decision. The Pocket worked great, every time. My husband and I just finished a month-long trek in the high Sierra’s and never worried once about whether our water filter was going to work or not. While on the trail, we spoke with numerous other hikers who broke their “plastic” filters too and were resorting to purification pills as a back-up. We told them to get a Pocket. The Pocket was easy to use, easier to maintain and solid as a rock. Do not let the weight of this filter dissuade you – you will be glad to have this filter when it really counts.

5 Stars Katadyn Pocket is the last filter you will ever buy
I previously owned a Katadyn Hiker Pro Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Microfilter and a Katadyn VarioKatadyn Vario Multi Flow Water Microfilter. Both had small plastic parts break in the middle of extended wilderness trips. For the Hiker, the input barb broke off and for the Vario the pump axis broke. I cannot say that I am hard on my equipment but tools that are made for the outdoors should withstand the occasional bump. Fortunately, the vendor took both itmes back for a full refund.

I decided to invest a bit more in a filter that I would not have to worry about and sprang for the Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter. I am not disappointed with my purchase. I only had a chance to use it once so far, but I can tell that it performs beautifully. All parts that could possibly break are either stainless steel. It is about three times as expensive as the Vario, but from the fact sheet you should get 25 times the filter capacity (2,000 liters for Vario vs. 50,000 liters for the Pocket). It should pay for itself!

Last but not least: I really liked the ergonomics of the Vario, especially with a plastic bottle attached to the bottom. I find the Pocket even better, works like an oldfashioned bicycle pump.

Conclusion: this will be the last filter I will have to buy.

2 Stars Dainty Plastic Filter
This pump only worked once. On my second trip the intake connection had broke off. The filter was packed well with no heavy objects around it, but broke anyway. Save your money on this one. Spend the extra cash on something more durable.

Spent 12 days at Philmont and used the Vario several times. It was quick and didn’t clog. We had 2 other filters that did not work as well/quickly. The Vario is bullkier than others but it works.

I ordered the water filter and much to my dismay the little tip that holds the tygon tube was broken. So I tried to get the part from the filer company but they did not have it as its from Switzerland. So I completed the online return and replace form with Amazon and they emailed the link to find the docs to print out and include in return box and I ordered a replacement, no charge, unless I dont return the original within 30 days, which I have since sent. GREAT. The water filter was sent to Malawi, where it is truly needed and reportedly works great. The replacement came VERY quickly, in time to catch its flight with a friend. So thanks the return system works very well.
